Scrap Safety

Which items should you never cut open or dismantle for scrap?

Short answer: Never cut into gas cylinders, fire extinguishers, aerosol cans, fuel tanks or any sealed or pressurised container, and do not dismantle fridges, air conditioners, batteries, capacitors or items that may contain asbestos, mercury or other hazardous contents, because cutting or heating a container that still holds gas, fuel or pressure can cause explosions or poisoning.

Pressure and fuel

Anything that has held gas, fuel or oil can explode or ignite when cut, even if it looks empty.

Refrigerant and electrics

Fridges and air conditioners contain gases that need licensed recovery, and capacitors and batteries can hold a dangerous charge.

When in doubt, leave it whole

If you are not certain an item is empty and safe, leave it intact and ask a buyer or the relevant disposal service how to deal with it.
